In the afternoon, proceed to Punakha or Wangdue Phodrang (4,300 ft.), passing through the scenic Dochu-La Pass (10,170 ft.), which offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. The pass is also home to 108 Druk Wangyal Khangzang Chortens, believed to bring immense spiritual merit, making it a must-visit attraction. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel. After breakfast, check out from the hotel with your luggage and begin your day by visiting the historic Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Once the seat of the government until the reign of the second king, this magnificent structure\u2014officially named Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness)\u2014still serves as the winter residence of the Je Khenpo. It was also the site where King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck held Bhutan\u2019s first National Assembly in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, take a short and pleasant hike to Chhimi Lhakhang, popularly known as the \u201cTemple of Fertility,\u201d founded by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the \u201cDivine Madman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
